Million Book Project – pass this on!

Hi,

Many of you have asked for more information about the Million Book Project. As this is in our synod, I am really hoping we fully participate in this effort to reduce poverty by increasing literacy in New Orleans. There are three ways to give that make this easy for you.

1. Donate $15 to purchase 4 books (thanks to a partnership with Scholastic) and the books will be directly delivered to our Literacy Camps being run by youth groups during the Gathering with local New Orleans Children, and to our Book Festivals where we will be giving away books to families to start home libraries.

2. Use the book list (http://www.gulfcoastsynod.org/books.html) to collect new books (from the Reading is Fundamental multi-cultural list – all have curriculum for the teacher and a parent info sheet to encourage reading at home on the RIF website.) Books should be dropped off at the Convention Center when you register for the Gathering. They will be sorted and distributed by Gathering volunteers.

3. Use the book list and order from Amazon before June 10, using the address provided on the website (http://www.gulfcoastsynod.org/books.html) and books will be shipped to the Convention Center for distribution in the city.

Please notice that there is a bulletin insert ready to print with this information on the website to make it easy to distribute. There is also a short video, with more videos being produced right now, that will help you communicate how important this is.

Reading breaks the cycle of poverty

Did you know that adults with low reading skills earn significantly less money than those that can read – regardless of a college degree?

The Million Book Project is an effort to encourage reading, build home, public and school libraries in New Orleans this summer.

The ELCA Youth will build 3 full libraries in NORDC Recreation Centers, host Literacy Camps and Book Festivals across the city.

You can help by collecting books or by sending this link so people can go online and for $15 buy 4 books.

Dear Peggy,

Greetings from Houston Lutheran Campus Ministry!

One way students are being equipped to lead and minister through Houston Lutheran Campus Ministry is by entrusting our monthly communication (which hasn’t been so "monthly"…mea culpa) to them. From this point on, you’ll get to know our students through these emails. They’ll be writing the articles, making the videos, and generating prayer concerns. Our student leaders will be taking their turn – trying their hand at communicating the happenings of HLCM to you. (This doesn’t let the campus pastor off the hook…I’ll be sharing a few thoughts with you, like I’m doing right now.)

This month, meet UH peer minister, Lizzy David. She comes to us from Maryland. In keeping with the virtue of brevity, her introductory video is just over 3 minutes. Watch it. Share it. Get to know a U of H student God is raising up to be a leader for Houston Lutheran Campus Ministry and the Church as we seek to welcome and support all students, faculty, and staff as they engage life’s questions, God’s call in their lives, and the faith of Christ.

Ecotone

Houston Lutheran Campus Ministry loves serving the Houston community. This past weekend three students from the University of Houston and two students from Rice University went to the Ecotone Garden run by Chef Tarsha.

Ecotone’s mission is to "Develop organic commerce and foster ecological global enrichment from a community sustainability platform." It is a garden in the middle of Houston where anyone can come to help tend to the plants and work towards a greater sense of community.

At the garden Henry and Zhiting built a fence for the plants to grow on while Lizzy, Jessica, Marshella and their new friend Ronald weeded part of the garden and planted many vegetables. It was a great morning spent by all even Pastor Brad eventually got his weed killer to work! (After years of sitting in a closet)

The group had a great time at Ecotone and we look forward to their opening of a Café down the street. We’ll continue helping the community through the efforts of Ecotone and Chef Tarsha.

Question of the Week

This semester we have been trying something new on the University of Houston Campus. Every week the Peer Ministers stand at a table in the University Center on Campus with poster paper and markers asking students on campus questions like "What is your biggest regret?" and "What is something you would like to say to the church?" The responses are astounding and students have begun to expect to see HLCM every week with a new question. This project has helped HLCM to reach out to students outside of the A.D. Bruce Religion Center and is allowing us to interact with students on another level. So we ask you, what would you like to ask the campus?

Central African Republic Resources

In February 2012 Lucia Quintanilla and Peggy Hahn joined a group of 4 other women from the Eastern and Western North Dakota synods on a trip to the Central African Republic, our Companion Synod. Of this trip, Peggy writes….

There are those moments in life when you know everything after this will be different. Liminal moments when God feels close enough to touch – this is what our trip in C.A.R. was like. When people ask me how this experience will impact my daily life, I have to be honest – I just don’t know yet, but I am praying about it.
